Amblyopia (Lazy Eyes)

Specialized Diagnosis & Vision Restoration Therapy in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai

What is a Lazy Eye (Amblyopia)?

Lazy eye, or **amblyopia**, is the loss or lack of development of central vision in one eye that is unrelated to any eye health problem and is not correctable with lenses alone. Studies suggest amblyopia affects about 3% of the population.

The affected eye is anatomically normal, but visual acuity is reduced because the brain-eye pathways did not develop normally. Amblyopia is the most common cause of vision problems in children, developing between birth and 8 or 9 years of ageβ€”the critical period when the visual system develops and matures. Notably, amblyopia causes more visual loss in people under 40 than all injuries and eye diseases combined.

"Babies are born with immature vision. As the brain, eye, and their pathways connect, vision gradually improves to adult level at around 6 or 7 years. If a clear image is not received from each eye during this phase, lazy eye can develop."

Link with Squints (Strabismus)

In children with a squint (misaligned eyes), the squinting eye is often found to have poor vision (it is "lazy" or amblyopic). The brain suppresses or turns off the signal from the misaligned eye to avoid double vision, which stops the eye/brain interconnections from developing normally.

* Important: The vision a child has by age 7 or 8 is generally the vision they will keep throughout life. Treatment of lazy eyes after this age is unlikely to be successful. Hence, early checkups are critical.

Treatment Options for Lazy Eye

At Utsav Eye Clinic, our treatment protocols for lazy eyes involve:

  • βœ”
Glasses Prescription: The child is checked for glasses, which are prescribed if necessary. Glasses help provide sharp focus and may even partially or fully correct the squint in certain squint types.
  • βœ”
Occlusion Patching Therapy: Patching the stronger (good) eye forces the brain to use and develop the weaker (lazy) eye. Patching schedules are carefully customized based on the child's age and depth of amblyopia.
  • βœ”
Pharmacological Blurring: For children who strongly resist patching, special eye drops (atropine) can be used to temporarily blur the good eye's close-up vision, forcing the lazy eye to work.
  • βœ”
Pharmacological Treatment: We are one of the few clinics in Navi Mumbai offering pharmacological neuro-modulation options for specific cases that do not respond to conventional patching therapy.

Note: Treating a lazy eye is always done before any squint surgery. Wearing glasses and patching will change the size of a squint, which helps the doctor determine the exact parameters for squint surgery if required.
